MOISTURE IN TIMBER FLOORING
We wish to confirm the following:
- The Australian Standard for parquetry flooring recommends, that moisture content in the timber should be between 10% - 14%.
- Within the industry, it is generally accepted that new timber should (if possible and practical) be placed on site for some time (1 – 4 weeks, depending on site conditions) prior to it being laid.
- Within the industry, it is also generally accepted that after the timber has been fixed it should be left to stabilize/acclimatize for a minimum period of 1 – 2 weeks before sanding and finishing commences.
- The equilibrium of timber in Perth is 12%, which, in layman’s terms, means that sooner or later the timber will stabilize at 12% no matter what the moisture content is.
- It is highly unlikely, that all of the timber, which has been allocated for any job, no matter how big or small, will, on the day it is laid have the same moisture content.
- The appearance of hairline cracks is, in many instances, unavoidable and cannot be deemed as poor workmanship or faulty timber.
